The horn comb that has come a long way!
The horn comb was the common comb in France and more widely in Europe or in the world, 70 years ago. Solid, comfortable, aesthetic, it was the ally of beautiful hair. However, in a world with a culture of abundance, where the key word was the growth of production to feed and equip a growing population, this comb requiring a lot of labor for its manufacture, was supplanted by the plastic comb, easy to mass produce; a comb whose use is particularly painful for long hair! The image of the comb in general has been tarnished by the plastic comb that pulls the hair, while the horn comb is very soft, and is a real ally of beautiful hair. Many people who try the horn comb "to see" do not go back, and adopt it immediately! Because it is the ideal tool: beautiful, comfortable, pleasant in the hand, effective for the health of the hair and its maintenance. It is also the ally of good scalp hygiene: it does not attack the hair which remains healthy without greasing, or protects it if it tends to be dry.
70 years ago, several thousand craftsmen worked on the manufacture of horn combs in France, mainly in the Hers valley in Ariège, and in the Juras, near Oyonnax, but also in many small factories set up wherever there were rivers (to use their energy by means of paddle wheels). Today, Thomas Liorac is the only one to manufacture these famous horn combs, with their incomparable touch, the last to perpetuate this traditional know-how. The tools are now connected to electric motors. The manufacture of a horn comb is energy-efficient.
Now, a contemporary horn comb
In addition, the Thomas Liorac horn comb is entirely made in our workshop. So there is no transport from the other side of the world. Only the horns are imported, then the finished comb is transported by La Poste public transport to you. There is no other intermediate transport. It is therefore an ecological object. The raw material is rapidly renewable (unlike the boxwood traditionally used), biodegradable.
Horn is a natural material. As with skin and hair, there are more or less dry horns, more or less flexible, with infinite variations in color, texture, thickness, relief. Horn is not a standard material. As a result, the industrialization of this craft is not currently possible. There are no machines that can replace the human hand from start to finish of the horn comb manufacturing stages.
Buying a Thomas Liorac comb means maintaining ancestral French know-how, but also buying a comb at a price that guarantees that the person who worked on this comb is an adult, and will receive fair compensation, will participate through his work in the French social system, because Thomas Liorac pays his contributions like any small business in France.
